Most people won’t g.e.t it right

A simple handwritten math puzzle recently sparked widespread debate online by asking: “500 divided by half plus 50 is?” Many people quickly answered 300, assuming “divided by half” meant dividing by two. However, the note itself warned that 300 was incorrect, prompting readers to reconsider their assumptions. What seemed like a basic arithmetic problem turned into a lesson about how easily wording can influence our interpretation of numbers.

The key source of confusion is the phrase “divided by half.” Mathematically, dividing by one-half is not the same as dividing by two. Instead, dividing by 0.5 is equivalent to multiplying by 2. Therefore, 500 ÷ 0.5 equals 1000. Once this step is understood, the rest of the calculation becomes straightforward and leads to a very different result than many initially expected.

After obtaining 1000, the final instruction is simply to add 50. This produces the correct answer: 1050. The puzzle succeeds because it exploits a common mental shortcut. Many people read quickly and rely on familiar patterns, causing them to interpret “divide by half” as “divide by two” without carefully considering the actual mathematical meaning.

The popularity of the puzzle highlights how problem-solving often depends as much on understanding the question as performing the calculation. While the arithmetic involved is elementary, the wording encourages readers to slow down and think critically. Its lasting appeal comes from demonstrating how a small detail can completely change the outcome and create an unexpected moment of discovery.
