Last night, my 23-year-old son, Tyler, hit me because I refused to give him $300. I didn’t scream or argue. I simply stood there, struggling to recognize the young man standing in front of me.
For nearly two years, Tyler had lived in my house without paying rent. Whenever he needed money, I helped him. I convinced myself that supporting him was what a loving mother should do.
But his demands kept growing, and so did his anger.
When I finally told him he needed to start contributing to household expenses, he became furious. Moments later, he struck me and walked upstairs without apologizing.
That night, I made a decision.
The following morning, I prepared his favorite breakfast. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, and fresh coffee covered the dining table.
I even brought out my mother’s beautiful embroidered tablecloth.
When Tyler came downstairs, he smiled, believing I had finally surrendered.
But the moment he entered the dining room, his smile disappeared.
