In his letter, Carl explained that he had been terrified his illness would eventually make him another burden for me. After Emily’s death, he convinced himself that disappearing would somehow protect Lily and me from even more pain.
But Carl had never completely disappeared. He secretly sent money through my father and watched Lily grow through photographs. He had also learned that the condition connected to Emily’s death might be hereditary, and he desperately wanted Lily to be tested.
Thankfully, Lily’s results eventually came back negative. We later found Carl living in a care facility. When Lily finally stood in front of the father she barely remembered, she looked at him and quietly said, “Hi. I’m clear.” Carl immediately broke down with relief and apologized for everything.
I told him the words I had carried for thirteen years: “You should have let me choose.” We could never recover the years we had lost, but Carl slowly became part of our lives again. I eventually understood that hiding a painful truth in an attempt to “protect” someone can create another kind of pain—because sometimes protection also takes away the other person’s right to choose.
