My MIL saw my newborn daughter for the first time, went pale, and said, “You can’t keep her” — when I learned the reason why, I nearly fainted

I had always believed I had won the mother-in-law lottery. Dorothy was warm, helpful, and never intrusive. During my pregnancy, she brought casseroles, folded tiny clothes, painted the nursery with us, and bought more baby blankets than anyone could possibly need. When our daughter Maisie was finally born after nineteen exhausting hours of labor, everything felt perfect. She was healthy, beautiful, and already had Calder completely wrapped around her tiny finger.

The next morning, Dorothy rushed into the hospital carrying shopping bags and an enormous stuffed rabbit. Her face lit up when she saw Maisie—until she noticed a small oval birthmark on our daughter’s upper arm. Dorothy suddenly went pale. She asked whether the doctor had examined it, then backed away from the bassinet with tears filling her eyes. Calder demanded to know what was wrong. Dorothy stared at him, then whispered the words that changed everything: “You can’t take her home yet… because I’ve seen that mark before.”
