My husband, Warren, and I spent years dreaming of becoming parents. We went through appointments, tests, injections, procedures, and more disappointing pregnancy results than I could count. Eventually, we decided that becoming a family mattered more than how it happened. That’s when we adopted our son, Sam. From the moment we brought him home, he wasn’t our “adopted child.” He was simply our son.
Then something happened we had almost stopped believing was possible: I became pregnant. The surprise became even greater when doctors told us we were expecting twins. Our home was suddenly preparing to welcome two more babies, and we couldn’t have been happier.
But when we shared the news with Warren’s mother, her reaction wasn’t what either of us expected. Instead of simply celebrating, she began talking about Sam as though his place in our family had somehow changed.
Then she made a suggestion that left the room completely silent.
She told us that now we were having “our own” children, we should give Sam back.
