My Mother-in-Law Threw Away Our Dinner While I Was Sick, Then My Husband Made One Call

By five o’clock, sitting up felt like fighting gravity. I’d spent most of the day under two blankets with a fever. Nathan had wanted to stay home, but I insisted he attend his quarterly meeting. Before leaving, he refilled my water and told me, “Stay in bed. And order dinner.” When the kids came home, I ordered pasta for them, steak and potatoes for Nathan, and chicken soup for myself. Then Nathan’s mother, Angela, arrived.

When the food came, I asked Angela to bring my soup upstairs. Fifteen minutes passed. Nothing. I finally forced myself downstairs and found every container—including my unopened soup—inside the trash. “A good wife cooks dinner herself,” Angela told me. Twenty minutes later, Nathan came home to find his children eating crackers and me crying at the kitchen table. When Angela proudly admitted what she’d done, Nathan looked inside the trash. Then, unexpectedly, he smiled. “You know what, Mom? You’re absolutely right.” He pulled out his phone and made one call that immediately made Angela go pale. Continue below to discover who he called.

“Aunt Irene?” Nathan said into the phone. “Do you still have that old Tuesday dish you always joke you should’ve thrown out twenty years ago?” Angela froze. Twenty minutes later, a silver-haired woman arrived carrying an old casserole dish with a repaired handle and yellowed masking tape across the lid. Angela went pale when Nathan placed it on the table. Two faded words were still visible: ANGELA — TUESDAY.

Irene explained that for almost a year, Angela had come to her back door at least twice a week when Nathan was young. Tuesday was usually chicken and rice; Thursday was often soup. One night, when Nathan had pneumonia, an exhausted Angela arrived crying that she couldn’t keep up. Irene gave her dinner and told her, “Feed your boy. Nobody said you had to stir every pot yourself.”

Nathan looked at his mother. “If Irene feeding me didn’t make you less of a mother, why did Yoli ordering dinner make her less of a wife?” Angela insisted it had been different because she was overwhelmed. “So am I,” I replied. Nathan then told her to go home and, from then on, to call before visiting. “You threw away my kids’ dinner and told my sick wife to cook. That isn’t concern.”

The next morning, Angela called before coming over. She entered my bedroom carrying a bowl of soup. When I asked if she’d made it, she paused. “No. Irene did. I brought it.” Then she noticed my empty water glass, quietly refilled it, and asked if I needed anything else. The day before, she’d told me to get up and serve everyone. Now she was standing beside my bed asking how she could help. For once, Angela wasn’t teaching me how to be a good wife. She was learning how to be a good mother-in-law.
