My teen son just showed me his feet and the skin is peeling off between his toes

Does anyone have any idea what this is used for? Seems like a waste

It was late one evening when my teenage son walked into the kitchen looking uncomfortable. After sitting down, he removed his sneakers and sports socks and showed me the skin between his toes. It was peeling badly, leaving pink, irritated areas that looked painful. He admitted the burning sensation had started a few days earlier but had become much worse. With an important sports practice scheduled for the next morning, we wanted to address the problem quickly.

After reviewing the symptoms, it appeared to be athlete’s foot, a common fungal infection that thrives in warm, damp environments. People who spend long hours in athletic shoes are especially prone to developing it. Symptoms often include itching, burning, peeling skin, cracking, and discomfort between the toes. If ignored, the irritation can worsen and may even lead to additional complications.

We started by gently washing his feet with mild soap and cool water before carefully drying every area, especially between the toes. Moisture allows fungus to thrive, so keeping the skin dry is essential. We then applied an over-the-counter antifungal cream according to the package directions. Within a short time, the burning sensation began to ease.

The following day, we focused on prevention. Clean moisture-wicking socks, properly dried shoes, and good foot hygiene became part of his routine. We also discussed wearing sandals in public locker rooms and shared shower areas. Fortunately, his symptoms improved quickly. The experience reminded us that paying attention to small health concerns early can prevent bigger problems later, especially for active teenagers who spend hours in athletic footwear.
