My toddler woke up with these tiny red bumps clustered all around his ankles. The nurse line is completely busy and he keeps scratching them. What is this?

Seeing tiny red bumps suddenly appear around your child’s ankles can be unsettling. They’re scratching, they’re uncomfortable, and you’re searching the bedroom wondering what could possibly be causing it.

You wash the pajamas. You change the sheets. Maybe you even switch detergents. But then another cluster appears—and the mystery continues.

One possible culprit is surprisingly small: fleas.

Flea bites commonly appear around the feet, ankles, and lower legs because fleas often live close to floor level. They may hide in carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, pet bedding, and cracks around flooring. A pet can sometimes carry fleas indoors, but infestations can occur even when you haven’t noticed fleas directly on an animal.

The bites may appear as small, itchy red bumps, sometimes grouped together. However, appearance alone cannot confirm that fleas are responsible. Mosquitoes, bed bugs, mites, contact irritation, and several skin conditions can cause bumps that look similar.

If fleas are suspected, check pets and their bedding, vacuum carpets and furniture thoroughly, wash washable fabrics, and consider speaking with a veterinarian about appropriate flea treatment for pets. Persistent infestations may require professional pest control.

Most importantly, don’t assume every unexplained rash is an insect bite. If your child develops severe swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, signs of infection, or a rash that keeps spreading or doesn’t improve, seek medical advice.

Sometimes the smallest household visitor can create a surprisingly big mystery.
