On Our 10 Year Marriage Anniversary My Husband Proposed an Open Relationship I Agreed Only to Teach Him a Lesson

The night he told me he wanted an open marriage, something in me shattered. Then, slowly, something else woke up. I agreed—not because I thought it would rescue us, but because I was exhausted from being the only person terrified of losing what we had. He seemed almost relieved. For months, he had talked about feeling trapped, missing excitement, wondering whether marriage had made us strangers to ourselves. Now he finally had the freedom he thought would fix everything.

Reality was different. His dates were awkward, inconsistent, and often disappointing. Meanwhile, I met someone who actually listened when I spoke. He noticed things my husband had stopped noticing years earlier. I laughed more. I dressed differently. I remembered the woman I had been before our marriage became schedules, bills, silence, and two people scrolling beside each other in bed.

That was when my husband’s confidence disappeared. Suddenly he wanted rules. Then fewer dates. Then he wanted everything to stop.

Our worst argument followed. He accused me of replacing him. I accused him of noticing me only when another man did. Eventually there was nothing left to defend, and the truth finally came out: neither of us had really wanted other people. We had wanted to feel wanted again.

So we closed the marriage—but we didn’t pretend everything was repaired.

We went to counseling. We talked about loneliness, resentment, intimacy, and all the small disappointments we had buried because discussing them felt harder than ignoring them.

Some conversations nearly ended us.

Others brought us closer than we had been in years.

Opening our marriage didn’t save it.

It exposed it.

And once we saw what was actually broken, we finally had to decide whether we loved each other enough to rebuild—or whether loving each other meant having the courage to walk away.
