Years ago, my wife and I were driving home late one night when our car suddenly broke down in the middle of nowhere. It was long before cell phones, and we had no easy way to call anyone for help. As darkness closed in and worry began to settle over us, a college student pulled over and kindly offered us a ride into town.
We were incredibly grateful and tried to pay him for going out of his way to help two complete strangers. But he simply smiled, refused the money, and said, “Just pass it on.” Those few words stayed with us, although, like many small miracles in life, the moment eventually faded into the background of our memories. Then, years later, my wife called me while I was at work and urgently told me to turn on the news. The face appearing on the television was unmistakable.
