Reggie Bannister, Beloved ‘Phantasm’ Actor and Musician, Has Passed Away at 80

Reggie Bannister is gone, and the silence he leaves behind feels impossibly loud. Fans who grew up with his shotgun, his ice cream truck, and that weary, human courage in Phantasm are mourning one of horror’s most unforgettable faces. Bannister died peacefully at his California mountain home on August 9, 2026, at the age of 80, after years of declining health. His wife, Gigi, remained beside him during his final moments. But Bannister was far more than the character audiences knew as Reggie. He was an actor, musician, producer, Vietnam veteran, husband, and longtime collaborator within the horror community. His journey with Phantasm began in 1979, when he first stepped into the role of an ordinary ice cream vendor who somehow became an unlikely hero against supernatural forces. He would return as Reggie throughout all five films, turning the character into a lasting cult icon. (PHANTASM.com)

In his later years, Bannister faced Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, eventually receiving hospice care at home. Yet even as his physical abilities declined, his connection with the fans remained powerful. His wife shared that his final request was for fans to know: “It’s never over.” (People.com)

And perhaps that is the perfect farewell. Because somewhere, an ice cream truck is still rolling down a dark road, a shotgun is being loaded, and Reggie is still refusing to give up. The man may be gone, but the unlikely hero he created will keep driving through the nightmares of horror history—forever.
