Scientists Discover Unusual Cockroach Milk With Surprising Nutrients That Could Change the Future of Food

The unusual substance comes from a species called Diploptera punctata, commonly known as the Pacific beetle cockroach. Unlike most cockroaches, which lay eggs, this species gives birth to live young. During development, its offspring receive a nutrient-rich secretion from their mother. Inside the developing insects, this liquid forms protein crystals that provide concentrated nourishment.

Scientists studying these crystals discovered a combination of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The proteins contain essential amino acids, which are important because the human body cannot produce them all independently. Researchers also found that the crystals have a high energy density, making them scientifically interesting. However, their nutritional composition alone does not establish that cockroach milk is healthier than conventional foods or beneficial for human consumption.

One of the biggest challenges is production. Unlike dairy animals, cockroaches produce only tiny quantities of this substance, making direct extraction impractical for commercial food manufacturing. Researchers have explored whether biotechnology could eventually help produce similar proteins without relying on large numbers of insects. Such methods would need to be efficient, affordable, and suitable for food production before becoming realistic alternatives.

Safety is another major unanswered question. Scientists would need to examine digestibility, potential allergic reactions, long-term health effects, and manufacturing standards before considering widespread human consumption. Cockroach milk is not an established commercial food, and there is currently insufficient evidence to recommend consuming it. Despite the attention surrounding its unusual nutritional properties, its future remains uncertain.

For now, cockroach milk is an intriguing scientific discovery rather than a proven superfood. Whether it eventually inspires new nutritional supplements or food technologies remains to be seen. But the research demonstrates how even unexpected creatures can offer scientists valuable insights into biology and nutrition.
