Recognizing narcissistic traits can be difficult because people can appear charming, confident, and likable at first. Surprisingly, research has explored whether one particular facial feature might influence how accurately strangers perceive those traits: the eyebrows.
In the study, researchers photographed participants with neutral expressions and measured grandiose narcissism using a personality questionnaire. Other people were then asked to judge narcissistic traits simply by looking at the photographs. The researchers found that participants could make above-chance judgments, and further experiments suggested that the eyebrows played an important role. When eyebrows were isolated, observers could still make judgments, and when eyebrows were digitally swapped between faces, perceptions changed along with them. But what exactly about the eyebrows seemed to matter—and does this really mean you can identify a narcissist simply by looking at someone’s face?
