Before You Travel: A Practical Guide to Keeping Sink Odors Away

Preparing your home for a trip usually involves the essentials—securing doors, unplugging electronics, and setting the thermostat. Yet one easily missed detail is your sink. When left unused for days or weeks, drains can develop unpleasant odors that greet you the moment you return. A few simple steps before you leave can help maintain a fresh, comfortable home environment.

The key factor behind these odors is a plumbing component known as the P-trap. This curved section of pipe beneath the sink holds a small amount of water that acts as a barrier against sewer gases. During regular use, this water seal remains intact. However, when a sink sits idle for an extended period, the water can slowly evaporate, allowing odors to travel back through the drain.

A practical solution is to create a light, temporary cover for the drain. Placing a folded paper towel over the opening and covering it with an inverted glass forms a simple barrier. This setup helps limit airflow that carries odors while avoiding a tight seal that could trap moisture. It’s an easy method that requires no special tools and takes only a moment to arrange.

For best results, combine this step with basic maintenance. Run hot water through the drain to clear residue, and consider adding a small amount of vinegar to help neutralize any lingering smells. Ensuring the sink area is dry before covering it further reduces the chance of buildup. With this quick routine, you can return home to a cleaner, more pleasant space without unwanted surprises.
