She Was Known for This One Thing, Yet She Disappeared from Screens – What Happened?
A viral video appeared to show a Shake Shack customer being charged more for a shake after selecting “no tip,” sparking a fresh backlash over America’s growing tipping culture. The customer claimed the price increased from $5.99 to $6.49 immediately after declining gratuity, leading many viewers to suspect the kiosk was penalizing customers who chose not to tip.
But the story took a different turn.
Shake Shack later explained that the price change was caused by a technical error in the self-service kiosk, not by the customer’s decision to leave no tip. The company rejected the idea that its system intentionally charges customers more when they decline gratuity.
The incident nevertheless struck a nerve because tipping prompts have become increasingly common at checkout screens, even in situations where customers may not expect to tip. For many people, the video seemed to confirm a growing concern: that digital payment systems could quietly pressure customers into paying more.
In this case, however, the evidence points to a kiosk malfunction rather than a hidden no-tip surcharge. The viral reaction shows how quickly an unexplained price change can fuel suspicion—especially when it happens at the exact moment a customer declines a tip.
So while the video sparked a larger conversation about tipping culture, Shake Shack says customers weren’t being punished for choosing “no tip.”
