Social Security Announces New Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Checks – What You Need to Know

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced the 2025 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), providing relief to millions facing higher prices for essentials. While smaller than the historic 2023 increase, this adjustment helps keep benefits in line with inflation.

The 2025 COLA is 3.2%, affecting over 70 million people, including retired workers, disability recipients, survivors, and SSI beneficiaries. The increase will begin appearing in January 2025 payments.

For retired workers, the average monthly benefit will rise by about $50, reaching roughly $1,790. Maximum benefits at different ages are also increasing: $2,781 at 62, $3,923 at 67, and $5,001 at 70.

Disability benefits will see an increase as well, with the average going from $1,401 to $1,438 and the maximum from $3,822 to $3,923. Survivors’ benefits are also rising, with the average moving from $1,509 to $1,549.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will see adjustments, with the average benefit increasing from $695.84 to $714. Individual payments rise from $943 to $968, and couples’ payments from $1,415 to $1,452. Essential person payments will go from $472 to $497.

COLA increases are designed to help people on fixed incomes maintain purchasing power. Many rely on Social Security to cover groceries, medications, housing, utilities, and transportation.

While the adjustment provides needed relief, advocates point out that costs for healthcare and housing continue to rise faster than annual increases, meaning some expenses may still outpace benefits.

To prepare, beneficiaries should check their updated Social Security payments in January. The new amounts will be automatically included, ensuring recipients receive the increased benefits without needing to take additional action.
