Striped nails may indicate health issues like deficiencies or disease; consult a professional for evaluation.

Nail lines—whether vertical or horizontal—are something many people notice at some point, often without thinking much of them. These ridges or stripes can appear slowly over time and vary in depth and visibility. In most cases, they are harmless, but they can sometimes reflect changes happening inside the body. Because nails grow gradually, they often act like small indicators of overall health, influenced by nutrition, hydration, and daily habits.

Vertical nail lines, which run from the base to the tip, are the most common. They are often linked to the natural aging process, as nail growth slows and the surface becomes less smooth over time. However, they can also become more noticeable when the body lacks key nutrients like iron, zinc, or B vitamins. When the body is under-nourished, it prioritizes vital organs, which can affect nail quality.

Horizontal lines, sometimes called Beau’s lines, are different and can appear as grooves across the nail. These are often linked to temporary disruptions in growth caused by illness, stress, or physical strain. In some cases, they may also be associated with conditions such as thyroid issues or anemia. Since nails grow slowly, these lines can sometimes reflect when the disruption occurred.

Beyond health conditions, everyday factors like dehydration, harsh chemicals, and frequent exposure to water can also weaken nails and contribute to visible changes. Stress can play a role too, affecting how the body absorbs nutrients and how efficiently nails grow.

While most nail lines are not serious, persistent or sudden changes may be worth paying attention to. In some cases, they can be a gentle signal from the body that something needs care, making nail health a small but useful reflection of overall well-being.
