The dramatic story spreading online appears to mix genuine scientific developments with science-fiction-style claims. Researchers really are using artificial intelligence in medicine and reproductive science, while gene-editing technology such as CRISPR has opened possibilities that once seemed unimaginable. But that is very different from creating a baby biologically integrated with AI or possessing some form of “total immunity.”
China was at the center of a genuine controversy in 2018 when scientist He Jiankui announced the birth of gene-edited twins. That experiment involved altering the CCR5 gene in an attempt related to HIV resistance—not creating AI-enhanced humans. Chinese authorities later condemned the work after an investigation.
