The Purple Porch Light May Look Decorative, But Its Quiet Message Can Mean Hope, Strength, And Support

Every evening, the woman across the street turned on a purple porch light. At first, I assumed it was simply a decorative choice. The soft violet glow looked unusual against the row of ordinary white porch lights, and I never thought much about it.

Then, one evening, I noticed several other houses in the neighborhood glowing purple too. I became curious and finally asked a friend about it. That was when I learned that purple is commonly used to represent domestic violence awareness. For many people, the color symbolizes courage, hope, strength, and resilience.

The lights weren’t necessarily announcing anything personal about the people living inside those homes. Instead, they could serve as quiet reminders that survivors deserve support, compassion, and the chance to rebuild their lives.

After that conversation, I began seeing those purple lights differently. What had once looked like an unusual decorating trend suddenly felt much more meaningful. Each small glow seemed to carry a message without requiring anyone to say a word.

Sometimes awareness doesn’t arrive through a speech, a headline, or a large public event. Sometimes it appears quietly in a window, on a porch, or along an ordinary neighborhood street.

And perhaps that’s what makes symbols like these so powerful. They remind people who may be struggling in silence that they are not invisible, that others care, and that violence should never be treated as something a person simply has to endure.

The next time I see a purple porch light, I won’t just see a color. I’ll see a reminder to listen, support, and never look away.
