The Reason You Should Always Place a Coin in Your Freezer

What a Snake in Your Dream vs Your House May Symbolize and What It Means

Most people assume that if food is sitting in a freezer, it must still be safe to eat. Unfortunately, power outages, appliance malfunctions, and other unexpected events can cause frozen food to thaw and refreeze without anyone noticing. When this happens, foods such as meat, poultry, seafood, and dairy products may become unsafe due to the growth of harmful bacteria. The challenge is that once power is restored, it can be difficult to tell whether your freezer maintained a safe temperature while you were away.

That is why a simple household trick known as the “coin in a cup” method has gained so much attention. The idea is easy to set up and can provide valuable information after an extended absence. Start by filling a cup with water and placing it in the freezer until the water becomes completely frozen. Once the ice is solid, place a coin on top and return the cup to the freezer.

If the freezer remains cold the entire time, the coin should stay on top of the ice. However, if the power goes out long enough for the ice to melt, the coin will begin to sink. If the coin is found at the bottom of the cup when you return, it may indicate that the contents of the freezer fully thawed before refreezing. A coin positioned somewhere in the middle suggests partial melting may have occurred.

While this method is not a substitute for food safety guidelines, it can serve as a helpful warning sign. When in doubt about the condition of frozen food, experts generally recommend discarding questionable items. A small amount of caution is always better than risking foodborne illness.
