I turned around and froze. The kitchen towel was touching the side of the hot oven, and a small section had begun to darken. For a second, I simply stared at it, unable to believe how quickly something so ordinary could become dangerous. I grabbed the towel and pulled it away, then noticed how close it had been to the burner.
That moment changed the way I looked at the little habits in my kitchen. A towel hanging from an oven handle can seem completely harmless, but depending on the oven design and how close the towel is to burners or other hot surfaces, it can become overheated or potentially catch fire. It can also create another problem: someone reaching for the oven handle may accidentally pull the towel into a hot area.
I immediately moved my kitchen towels to a hook several feet away from the stove and oven. I also stopped using towels to grab hot cookware, keeping proper oven mitts nearby instead. It seemed almost silly at first because I had done things the old way for years without an incident.
But that evening taught me something I still remember whenever I walk into the kitchen: just because a habit has never caused a problem doesn’t mean it couldn’t.
Sometimes the most dangerous household habits are the ones that feel completely normal—until the day they aren’t.
