Known as a locker loop, it originally served a practical purpose. Students and athletes could hang their shirts on hooks inside crowded locker rooms without needing hangers. This helped prevent wrinkles and reduced the risk of stretching the collar. By the mid-20th century, the feature had become closely associated with American college fashion, particularly the classic Ivy League look.
But as its popularity grew, an unusual tradition reportedly developed on college campuses. According to a long-standing legend, the loop could communicate something surprisingly personal about whoever wore the shirt.
