A white cloth flapping from a car window is not always decoration. Sometimes, it can be an improvised signal. You may spot one in traffic or on a vehicle stopped along the road, hanging there almost like a surrender flag, and immediately wonder what it means. Is someone hurt? Has the vehicle broken down? Should you move aside, stop to help, or simply continue driving?

A white cloth has sometimes been used informally by motorists when they need to attract attention. Depending on the situation and local customs, it might indicate a mechanical problem, a stranded vehicle, or someone trying to signal that assistance is needed. In some circumstances, people may also use similar markers to identify vehicles traveling together. But there is one important thing every driver should understand before reacting: a white cloth is not an official emergency signal and does not give a vehicle special legal privileges.
