Can You Really Spot the Hidden Number

The holiday season often brings stress, travel, colder weather, and changes in daily routines, all of which can trigger scalp problems such as redness, itching, and flaking. Indoor heating and dry air may strip moisture from the scalp, while new hair products, dyes, or styling treatments can cause irritation. Even people who have never experienced scalp issues before may suddenly notice symptoms during busy periods when self-care is neglected.

One of the most common causes of a red and flaky scalp is Seborrheic dermatitis, which is linked to an overgrowth of natural skin yeast. It often causes greasy white or yellow flakes along with redness and itching. Other possible causes include dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, or fungal infections such as scalp ringworm. Conditions like Psoriasis can create thick patches with silvery scales, while eczema is usually associated with intense itching and dry skin.

Hair products may also trigger allergic reactions due to ingredients like fragrances or preservatives. Stress, hormonal changes, and lack of sleep can worsen symptoms by increasing inflammation in the body. Although social media remedies such as aloe vera or coconut oil may help some people, harsh DIY treatments can sometimes make irritation worse if overused.

Gentle scalp care can help reduce discomfort while waiting to see a doctor. Medicated shampoos containing ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione are commonly recommended. However, severe pain, swelling, pus, or sudden hair loss should be evaluated by a healthcare professional as soon as possible.
