I couldn’t stop staring at the photo later, safe on my couch, as if the eel might still twist out of the frame. Knowing its name, “moray,” felt clinical, too small for the dread it left behind. It hadn’t attacked, hadn’t moved, hadn’t even chosen to be there. Yet it changed the beach, and the way I looked at the water, in a single moment. The ocean that had always seemed flat, friendly, and predictable suddenly felt like a closed door I’d been foolish enough to assume was unlocked. That one stranded body was a message: there is a world under the surface that doesn’t care if we understand it, or if we’re ready to see it. It can wash up at our feet at any time, and it doesn’t need permission to rewrite what we think is safe.
