Many people spend money on expensive shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatments, hoping to keep their hair looking healthy and beautiful. But sometimes, the most interesting ingredients can be found in nature. One traditional herb attracting attention is perilla, also known as shiso, a fragrant leafy plant commonly used in East Asian cooking. Its leaves contain natural plant compounds, including antioxidants, making them an interesting addition to a balanced diet.
Preparing perilla leaf tea at home is surprisingly simple. Start with 8–10 fresh perilla leaves and approximately two cups of water. Wash the leaves thoroughly, bring the water to a boil, and add the leaves. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for five to seven minutes. Turn off the heat, allow the tea to steep for another two minutes, then strain it into a cup. Add a little honey or lemon if desired.
Perilla leaves contain polyphenols and flavonoids that researchers have studied for their antioxidant properties. However, there is currently no reliable clinical evidence that drinking perilla tea stimulates hair growth, prevents hair loss, or treats scalp conditions. Healthy hair depends on several factors, including nutrition, genetics, and overall health.
Some people also experiment with cooled herbal tea as a hair rinse, although its effectiveness remains unproven. Anyone trying this should test a small area first and stop if irritation occurs. Persistent hair loss or scalp problems deserve professional medical attention.
