The forest had been peaceful when my seven-year-old son, Leo, suddenly stopped several steps ahead of me. His face lost its color as he slowly backed away and grabbed my sleeve. Following his stare, I saw something protruding from the damp soil beside an old oak tree—thick crimson “fingers” curling upward as though a buried hand were forcing its way out of the ground.
The closer we looked, the worse it became. The strange growth was slick, red, and fleshy, fading to pale pink near its base. Then a foul smell drifted toward us, unmistakably reminiscent of decay. My mind immediately raced through horrifying possibilities. I pulled Leo behind me and took out my phone, wondering whether I was standing beside an animal carcass—or something far more serious. Then I searched for what we were seeing, and the answer completely changed the terrifying scene in front of us.
