Which Way Is the Correct Way to Hang Toilet Paper? (The Answer Might Surprise You)

The fight starts in the smallest room of the house. A flipped toilet paper roll, a muttered complaint, a quiet, stubborn correction. Over or under isn’t just a quirk—it can feel like a challenge, a judgment, even a tiny betrayal.

Lovers, roommates, and families have been drawing invisible battle lines over a cardboard tube for generations. One person insists the paper should hang over the top, where the loose end is easy to grab. Another prefers it underneath, claiming it looks neater and is less likely to unravel accidentally.

Then comes the silent part of the argument.

Someone walks into the bathroom and notices the roll has been changed.

They don’t ask who did it.

They simply turn it around.

Minutes later, someone else changes it back.

Nobody says a word, but somehow everyone knows exactly what’s happening.

The funny thing is that toilet paper orientation is rarely about toilet paper. It can become one of those tiny household habits that represents something bigger: personal preference, routine, control, or the feeling that your way of doing something should be respected.

And yet, according to the famous 1891 patent for rolled toilet paper by Seth Wheeler, the illustrated design showed the paper coming over the top.

So if you’ve always argued that over is the “correct” way, you have a little historical ammunition on your side.

Of course, your family may still disagree.

And somehow, that’s what makes this ridiculous little debate so entertaining: after all these years, the bathroom remains one of the few places where a cardboard roll can start a full-scale household war.
