Why Was There a Rubber Band on My Mailbox

It seemed like an ordinary morning until my neighbor noticed something unusual outside her house. Wrapped tightly around the little flag on her mailbox was a rubber band. There was no note attached, no advertisement nearby, and no obvious explanation for why someone would have put it there. At first, we laughed it off. Then we started wondering.

Online, strange theories weren’t difficult to find. Some people claimed small objects placed on mailboxes could be secret markers used to identify empty houses or homes receiving frequent deliveries. Others suggested package thieves might use them to see whether residents were paying attention. Those claims sounded frightening, but there was an important problem: there was little evidence that rubber bands were part of any widespread criminal code. And when we considered the more ordinary explanations, one possibility suddenly made much more sense.
