Young woman hospitalized after being penet…See more

Then tears slipped down my face as my best friend and a nurse held my legs apart, while another nurse inserted gauze into my vagina to try and stop the bleeding.

Everyone always says you’ll remember the first time you have sex, but I’d thought it would be because of how awkward it would be. My first time featured a blood-stained bed, carpet, bathtub and three different hospital rooms.

My First Experience Changed Everything

I was in my late teens when I had sex for the first time with a boy I was dating. He had booked a hotel room, but I never expected that I would lose my virginity that day. I was nervous, anxious, and completely unprepared. I didn’t know how to behave or what to expect, and I was too afraid to speak up.

The experience quickly became frightening. I experienced severe pain and unexpected heavy bleeding, leaving me terrified that something was seriously wrong. We stopped, and after trying to manage the bleeding myself, I contacted medical services. I became dizzy and nearly fainted, eventually being sent to hospital for urgent assessment. Doctors discovered tears in my vaginal walls and treated the bleeding. I stayed in hospital for two nights before it finally stopped.

What affected me most wasn’t only the physical pain, but the fear and shame surrounding the experience. I had grown up believing that sex was something forbidden and embarrassing, so I was terrified my parents would find out.

A year passed before I felt ready to try again. This time, everything was slower, more comfortable, and based on trust and communication. I learned that being ready matters—emotionally and physically—and that nobody should feel pressured to continue when something hurts.

If I could speak to my younger self, I would simply say: wait until you are ready, listen to your body, and never be afraid to set boundaries.
