Your Mop May Be Dirtier Than Your Floors, but These Simple Cleaning Methods Can Help

Most of us use a mop to keep our floors spotless and fresh. We add scented cleaners or disinfectants expecting perfectly clean results. But there’s one part of the cleaning process that’s surprisingly easy to overlook: the mop itself. Every time it moves across the floor, its fibers collect dust, grease, debris, and moisture.

Without proper washing and drying, a mop can develop unpleasant odors and become increasingly dirty. Fortunately, that doesn’t always mean you need to throw it away. Unless the fibers are badly worn, no longer absorb properly, or can’t be cleaned thoroughly, washing the mop head may be enough. Several common household ingredients—including baking soda and vinegar—can help remove grime or odors. But there’s one step that’s even more important than choosing a cleaning ingredient, and skipping it can quickly leave your freshly washed mop smelling unpleasant all over again.
