My husband and I bought a box of unclaimed packages for fun — the last one had his name on it from 15 years ago, and he begged, “Don’t open it”

I locked myself in the bathroom and tore through the old tape despite Bennett begging me to stop. Inside was a battered brown leather briefcase and a handwritten note from a man named Arthur saying he had repaired the handle and hoped Bennett would eventually pay him. When I confronted my husband, he finally admitted something I had never known: three months after our wedding, he had lost his job and kept it secret from me.

For nearly four months, Bennett dressed for work every morning, kissed me goodbye, and left the apartment carrying that briefcase. Instead of going to an office, he spent his days at the library applying for jobs, attending interviews, or walking around until it was time to come home. He even invented meetings and coworkers because he was ashamed to admit he had been laid off. Some days, he skipped meals because our bank balance was almost empty.

The briefcase led us back to Arthur’s old repair shop. Arthur remembered Bennett immediately. Years earlier, Bennett’s cheap briefcase had broken before an important interview, and Arthur repaired it despite Bennett having almost no money. After Bennett finally found another job, he returned, paid Arthur, and asked him to restore the briefcase completely because he intended to bring it home and finally confess everything to me. But we moved unexpectedly, and the repaired package was returned as undeliverable.

Fifteen years later, that forgotten package somehow ended up in the random box we bought for entertainment. Bennett admitted he had kept postponing the truth until telling me felt impossible. Then came one final confession: his current company had just announced possible layoffs, and he had been hiding that too. This time, I told him there would be no pretending and no protecting me with silence. That night, the old briefcase went onto our bedroom shelf—not hidden away, but completely visible, exactly where the truth finally belonged.
