My 23-Year-Old Son Hit Me After I Refused Him Money So I Prepared an Unexpected Breakfast

Sitting at the dining table was my ex-husband, Michael—Tyler’s father, who had driven through the night after receiving my phone call. Tyler stopped in the doorway, completely stunned. He hadn’t expected us to be together, especially after years of barely communicating. But Michael hadn’t come simply to discuss what happened the previous evening. He had brought something that revealed another troubling side of our son’s behavior.

Michael opened his phone and showed us messages Tyler had sent over the previous fourteen months. While Tyler had been asking me for money to cover bills and everyday expenses, he had secretly been requesting additional money from his father. Michael had given him more than $3,000, unaware that I was also supporting him. Some messages even suggested that Tyler believed I would eventually give in whenever he demanded something. I realized that our guilt over the divorce had allowed an unhealthy pattern to continue. But none of our parenting mistakes excused his decision to hurt me.

I told Tyler he could no longer live in my home under those circumstances. Michael offered him temporary accommodation, but only if he followed clear rules, searched for steady employment, and attended counseling. Tyler initially protested and tried to dismiss what had happened. Eventually, he packed his belongings and left with his father. Watching him walk away was heartbreaking, but I knew I couldn’t continue living in fear. The following months were difficult. Tyler resisted the new boundaries, but gradually began attending counseling and eventually found a warehouse job.

Almost three months later, Tyler asked to meet me at a café. This time, he didn’t blame me for his behavior. He acknowledged that he had made the decision to hit me and apologized without making excuses. I appreciated his words, but rebuilding trust required more than one conversation. Over the following year, he continued working, became financially independent, and made gradual progress in managing his anger. Our relationship slowly improved, although I maintained the boundaries necessary for my safety.

That experience taught me something I wish I had understood years earlier: Being a loving mother doesn’t mean accepting disrespect or violence. Sometimes protecting yourself is the most important decision you can make.
