How many babies do you see?

The answer is the wind. It can “run” because air moves rapidly across fields, streets, mountains, and valleys. During strong weather systems, winds can travel at remarkable speeds, making the description of running especially appropriate. You cannot watch the wind itself moving, but you can clearly see what happens when trees bend, flags flutter, dust rises, and loose objects are carried along.

Wind can also “fly without wings.” Unlike birds or airplanes, it requires no physical wings because wind is simply moving air. It travels through the atmosphere and can influence conditions across enormous distances. It pushes clouds, affects ocean waves, spreads seeds and pollen, and plays an important role in weather patterns around the world.

The cleverest clue may be that wind can “bite” despite having no teeth. Anyone who has walked outside on a bitter winter day understands the expression. Cold moving air can increase heat loss from exposed skin, making conditions feel colder than the measured air temperature. This effect is commonly described using wind chill, and that sharp sensation explains why people often talk about a “biting wind.”

Finally, wind itself doesn’t literally become a cold object; rather, moving air can bring colder air into an area and intensify how cold conditions feel on exposed skin. That makes the riddle both playful and surprisingly accurate. The answer was surrounding us all along—an invisible force capable of moving leaves, shaping weather, driving waves, and producing everything from a gentle breeze to a powerful storm. It has no legs, wings, or teeth, yet the wind can run, fly, and bite.
